Regional Guide - North Oxford
Summertown, Banbury and Woodstock Road
Mainly Victorian and Edwardian houses and spacious converted apartments. Traditionally a popular area for Oxford University students as some of the colleges and halls of residence, such as Wolfson, St Hughs and Lady Margaret Hall are all here. Access to the Science departments, Keble Road and the University’s central colleges is also very easy. There is a direct and regular bus service from the Banbury Road through to Headington and the Brookes University Gipsy Lane Campus; because of the close proximity to the centre, this area is now also popular with Oxford Brookes students. Regular buses to the city centre, Headington and the train station, can be caught on either the Banbury or Woodstock Roads. Many of the services that run along the Banbury Road operate on a 24hr basis.
Summertown offers a wide variety of shops from Co-op and Somerfield supermarkets, Marks & Spencer food store to an organic butcher and a super delicatessen. There is also a good choice of restaurants and takeaways with reasonable prices. Have your choice from a simple Fish and Chip shop, to a family run Italian restaurant or a Lebanese deli. Also ideal is the Marston Ferry Sports Centre which has a swimming pool, squash and badminton courts and offers a good range of classes.
Pubs and bars in Summertown are few and far between; there are a couple of decent locals like the Dew Drop, but a short walk to North Parade Avenue (towards the city centre) or Jericho, offers a much wider choice.
Jericho
Perhaps the most sought after area for students from both Oxford University and Oxford Brookes. Jericho offers a good choice of student accommodation. Perfectly located for access to most of the Colleges and a short bus or cycle ride to Brookes Gypsy Lane campus.
Nicknamed the "Chelsea" of Oxford; Jericho offers a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants and bars, many of which cater specifically for students such as The Jericho. Other good pubs to visit include Jude the Obscure, Bar Baby and Raouls. Again, there is a good variety of restaurants, especially curry houses such as Jamals. Other places worth visiting are Branca and Freuds.
