|For many Brookes students, this is the perfect place to set up home, as it is where the Gipsy Lane and Headington Hill campuses are located. It’s also great for medics as the John Radcliffe, Churchill, and Warneford hospitals are all nearby.
There is a wide range of housing available in this area, and most properties are within walking distance of the university.
Headington students shop for food in style as your local supermarket is a Waitrose. More prosaically there’s a Budgens on the London Road.
Bar Meze has an exciting Turkish/Greek menu and a lively atmosphere, enhanced by belly dancing on Fridays. If you like Indian food, head for Mirabai on the London Road, and Chinese fans enjoy good Cantonese cuisine at Hang Chow. Definitely worth a try is the university’s own teaching restaurant, Brookes Restaurant, on the Gypsy Lane campus.
The ubiquitous McDonalds shows its face here. Indian, Chinese, kebabs, and fish and chips are all easy to find on the London Road.
Pubs and clubs
The Black Boy probably ought to come in the restaurants section as it also qualifies as a brilliant but very reasonably priced gastropub. For a more traditional, village-pub feel, seek out the White Hart in St Andrews Road, especially when the weather’s nice enough to sit out in the garden. The Britannia Inn is friendly and relaxed, although often quite busy, especially on a Saturday night, with a good mix of clientele, including students, young professionals, and other locals.
Cashpoints with free withdrawals
Branches, with cashpoints, of all the major banks are situated on the London Road, and there is a Santander Bank at Oxford Brookes University.
The Post Office is located at 144 London Road, not far from the Coop Supermarket.
As the last suburb before the M40 motorway, which leads to London, it’s easy to pick up buses to London, Heathrow, and Gatwick. The Brookes bus runs frequently through Headington Road.
