Health & Beauty
Both universities insist that you register with a GP in Oxford so that all your records are here if there is an emergency. If you're at the University of Oxford, most colleges have a nominated doctor, but you can always choose to register with another practice if you wish. To find a local doctor, visit www.nhs.uk and type in your postcode.
If you're at Oxford Brookes you can register with practices in East Oxford, Jericho, Botley, Headington, and Wheatley as part of your enrolment. It helps if you can bring your NHS number with you, but it's not essential.
Accident and Emergency
The nearest accident and emergency department is at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headley Way, Headington. It has its own entrance on the left as you come up the main drive. The hospital is well signposted from London Road (Headington) and from the Ring Road.
Contraception and Sexual Health
The Alec Turnbull Centre is based in Cowley and offers confidential advice on all aspects of contraception (including emergency contraception), pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. It is run on a drop-in basis and you do not have to be referred by your doctor. It will also give advice over the telephone (01865 456666).
Late night chemists
The 10 O'Clock Chemist on the Woodstock Road isn't actually open until 10 any more – but you can still get a prescription filled until 7.30pm every night. Any later and you're looking at a trip to the Boots on the Oxford Retail Park (until midnight) or Leys Pharmacy on the Cowley Road, opposite the East Oxford Health Centre (until 10pm).
For urgent, out-of-hours dental care, call 0845 345 8995 and you will be given an appointment at one of the emergency dentists in Oxford. They will fix you up and relieve your pain until you are able to see your regular dentist.
If you do not have a regular dentist, then get one now. Go to www.nhs.uk for a list of NHS and non-NHS dentists near where you live.
Treat yourself and buy a day membership at the Randolph Hotel spa for a major pampering session in luxurious surroundings (www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/our-hotels/macdonald-randolph-hotel). If that's a bit beyond you, the TAO salon on St Aldates (www.taobeautyoxford.co.uk, 01865 249347) offers a range of beauty treatments and therapies for men and women. For nails, try the Amy Nails bars in Golden Cross or on the Cowley Road (01865 790909).
The beauty salons mentioned above both offer tanning. For a more specialised approach, The Tanning Shop in Blue Boar Street (www.thetanningshop.co.uk/salon_details.html?branch_id=95, 01865 798 728) has stand-up booths, beds, and a spray tan booth. In Headington, head for Sun of a Beach on the London Road (http://sobtanning.co.uk) for a customised 'tan plan'. You can even get a spray tan in the comfort of your own home with Timeless Tanning (www.timelesstanning.co.uk, 07773 693555).
